Introduction

When Satan entered into the affairs of this world, a chain of events was rapidly set in motion that staggers our imagination.  Man's rebellion against God ended the age of innocence and introduced an era in which man was guided by his moral conscience.  God interacted with men on a personal basis for many centuries.

Some men, like Cain, refused to follow God's advice; others, like Abel, found favor with God because they accepted His word and acted in faith. The continuing battle for the hearts of men has impacted all the affairs of mankind.

Now we will look at the time in history before the great worldwide flood – a time called the antediluvian period.  The word means “before the deluge”. It covers Genesis chapters four through seven.  It was a time when we have no written history – perhaps because people lived so many years that history was handed down by word of mouth from one generation to another. Yet, there may be old maps.  Some articles ask the question: “How is it possible that there are prehistoric, ancient maps, depicting regions of our planet like Antarctica without ice, dating back thousands of years? Did these maps belong to Antediluvian civilizations which inhabited our planet before written history?”

A Manifestation of Sin

“Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, 'I have acquired a man from the LORD.' Then she bore again, this time his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.  And in the process of time, it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the LORD. Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the LORD respected Abel and his offering, but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell” (Gen. 4:1-5).

Why did God refuse Cain's offering?  Hebrews chapter eleven tells us: “By faith Abel offered to God a better sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained the testimony that he was righteous…" (Heb. 11:4a).  Why did God accept Abel's offering and refuse Cain's?  Abel's offering was by faith, and by the shedding of blood it obtained righteousness.  Abel's righteousness was as filthy rags (Isa. 64:6) but by faith he became the righteousness of God.  Cain chose to be independent and to offer his own offering, which did not meet God's specifications – Cain’s offering did not require the shedding of blood.  As we can see, not everyone lays claim to the substitute.

Cain became very angry and slew his brother, Abel.  For the first time, sin (rebellion against God) manifested itself in the taking of a human life.  "Then Cain went out from the presence of the LORD and dwelt in the land of Nod on the east of Eden” (Gen. 4:16).  Cain elected to remain in bondage to Satan.  Many will raise the question, where did Cain get his wife. She probably was his sister. The Bible does not speak of the daughters of Adam and Eve. Cain descendants will develop a highly advanced cultivation over years to come.  We will talk about this later.

Flavius Josephus (37 CE - circa 100 CE) was a Jewish Historian who wrote of the early history of Israel in his works “Antiquities of the Jews”.  He had access to old records which are no longer available to us – perhaps some of the narratives were passed down from this time period. I am quoting what he said about Cain.

Quote:

“But Cain was not only very wicked in other respects, but was wholly intent upon getting; and he first contrived to plough the ground. He slew his brother on the occasion following: - They had resolved to sacrifice to God. Now Cain brought the fruits of the earth, and of his husbandry; but Abel brought milk, and the first-fruits of his flocks: but God was more delighted with the latter oblation, when he was honored with what grew naturally of its own accord, than he was with what was the invention of a covetous man, and gotten by forcing the ground; whence it was that Cain was very angry that Abel was preferred by God before him; and he slew his brother, and hid his dead body, thinking to escape discovery. But God, knowing what had been done, came to Cain, and asked him what was become of his brother, because he had not seen him of many days; whereas he used to observe them conversing together at other times. But Cain was in doubt with himself, and knew not what answer to give to God. At first he said that he was himself at a loss about his brother's disappearing; but when he was provoked by God, who pressed him vehemently, as resolving to know what the matter was, he replied, he was not his brother's guardian or keeper, nor was he an observer of what he did. But, in return, God convicted Cain, as having been the murderer of his brother; and said, ‘I wonder at thee, that thou knowest not what is become of a man whom thou thyself hast destroyed.’ God therefore did not inflict the punishment [of death] upon him, on account of his offering sacrifice, and thereby making supplication to him not to be extreme in his wrath to him; but he made him accursed, and threatened his posterity in the seventh generation. He also cast him, together with his wife, out of that land. And when he was afraid that in wandering about he should fall among Wild beasts, and by that means perish, God bid him not to entertain such a melancholy suspicion, and to go over all the earth without fear of what mischief he might suffer from wild beasts; and setting a mark upon him, that he might be known, he commanded him to depart.”

“And when Cain had traveled over many countries, he, with his wife, built a city, named Nod, which is a place so called, and there he settled his abode; where also he had children. However, he did not accept of his punishment in order to amendment, but to increase his wickedness; for he only aimed to procure everything that was for his own bodily pleasure, though it obliged him to be injurious to his neighbors. He augmented his household substance with much wealth, by rapine and violence; he excited his acquaintance to procure pleasures and spoils by robbery, and became a great leader of men into wicked courses. He also introduced a change in that way of simplicity wherein men lived before; and was the author of measures and weights. And whereas they lived innocently and generously while they knew nothing of such arts, he changed the world into cunning craftiness. He first of all set boundaries about lands: he built a city, and fortified it with walls, and he compelled his family to come together to it; and called that city Enoch, after the name of his eldest son Enoch. Now Jared was the son of Enoch; whose son was Malaliel; whose son was Mathusela; whose son was Lamech; who had seventy-seven children by two wives, Silla and Ada. Of those children by Ada, one was Jabal: he erected tents, and loved the life of a shepherd. But Jubal, who was born of the same mother with him, exercised himself in music; and invented the psaltery and the harp. But Tubal, one of his children by the other wife, exceeded all men in strength, and was very expert and famous in martial performances. He procured what tended to the pleasures of the body by that method; and first of all invented the art of making brass. Lamech was also the father of a daughter, whose name was Naamah. And because he was so skillful in matters of divine revelation, that he knew he was to be punished for Cain's murder of his brother, he made that known to his wives. Nay, even while Adam was alive, it came to pass that the posterity of Cain became exceeding wicked; every one successively dying, one after another, more wicked than the former. They were intolerable in war, and vehement in robberies; and if anyone were slow to murder people, yet was he bold in his profligate behavior, in acting unjustly, and doing injuries for gain.”

The Environment

Genesis 2:5-6 states that “the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth” and “a mist from the earth watered the whole face of the ground”. From this description, it seems that the earth was covered with a cloud canopy thereby creating a greenhouse effect. There are also, some questions as to seasons – perhaps the flood changed the tilt of the earth which results in our seasons.  Genesis 8:22 states “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, and day and night shall not cease.”  Many have speculated that the entire earth was very tropical and was also covered with lush vegetation.  All of this vegetation was turned under during the flood and has become our fossil fuels of oil and coal.  Perhaps, there were no high mountains or deep oceans at this time as these were created from the fountains of the deep.  This means that the whole earth would have been covered with land except for a few scattered shallow lakes.

Fossils show us that very large animals such as the dinosaurs once roamed the earth perhaps during this period of time.

Given the number of years and the long life span of people, there was adequate time for the whole earth to become populated.  Can you imagine living over nine hundred years and producing children well up into your latter years?  We know from the genealogies that many had children well over one hundred years of age.  This means that you would know many generations of your descendants.  Family stories would be passed on verbally throughout the years – and later would be written down.

God created Adam and his descendants with great wisdom. Most scholars believe that throughout the years the people created a great civilization - perhaps greater and more advanced than the one we have today.

“Then Lamech took for himself two wives: the name of one was Adah, and the name of the second was Zillah.  And Adah bore Jabal. He was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock. His brother’s name was Jubal.  He was the father of all those who play the harp and flute. And as for Zillah, she also bore Tubal-Cain, an instructor of every craftsman in bronze and iron.” (Gen. 4:19:22).

Lamech was the third great grandson of Cain. The grandsons were working with musical Instruments and metallurgy.  How advanced were they in their fields of study?

Do we have any artifacts of this time period?  It is interesting that perhaps we do.

Quote:
A Bell embedded in a lump of Coal

“In 1944, as a ten year old boy, Newton Anderson was fueling the coal furnace in his parent’s home. He dropped a lump of coal onto the basement floor and it broke in half, revealing that it contained this bell inside. The bituminous coal that was mined near his house in Upshur County West Virginia is supposed to be about 300 million years old! What is a brass bell with an iron clapper doing in coal ascribed to the Carboniferous Period? According to Norm Sharbaugh’s book Ammunition (which includes several “coal anecdotes”) the bell is an antediluvian artifact (made before the Genesis Flood). The Institute for Creation Research had the bell submitted to the lab at the University of Oklahoma. There a nuclear activation analysis revealed that the bell contains an unusual mix of metals, different from any known modern alloy production (including copper, zinc, tin, arsenic, iodine, and selenium).”

“’The fact that the bell’s metallurgical fingerprint is odd should not be surprising if, indeed, the bell is from pre-Flood times. It would not necessarily be expected to match any mix of known, post-Flood metal workings. The clapper inside the bell is composed of iron and it still rings beautifully. Genesis 4:22 states that Tubal-Cain was “an instructor of every artificer in brass and iron…’ These then were two of the metals with which craftsmen worked in the pre-Flood economy."

A Pot Embedded in a Lump of Coal

“Wilbert H. Rusch published an account in The Creation Research Society Quarterly 7, 1971 of a rough, cast iron pot that was found in a mid-Pennsylvanian coal seam at the Municipal Electric Plant in Sulphur City, OK. The artifact is now archived at Creation Evidence Museum. This small implement was embedded inside a single large lump of coal. While other coal artifacts have been found, but few have been well documented or analyzed. In this case, there is a notarized letter documenting the authenticity of the find.
The document states the following:

Sulfur Springs Arkansas
Nov. 27 – 1948

While I was working in the Municipal Electric Plant in Thomas, Oklahoma in 1912, I came upon a solid chuck of coal which was too large to use. I broke it with a sledge hammer. This iron pot fell from the center, leaving the impression, or moulds of the pot in a piece of the coal. Jim Stull (an employee of the company) witnessed the breaking of the coal, and saw the pot fall out. I traced the source of the coal and found that it came from Wilburton, Oklahoma Mines.

Frank J. Kennord

Sworn to before me, in Sulphru [sic] Springs, Arkansas, this 27th day of November, 1948

Cretaceous Hammer

“In June of 1934, members of the Hahn family discovered a chunk of limestone rock with wood protruding from it. They chiseled it open, exposing a fascinating hammer head. A small portion of the hammer was filed down to confirm that it was in fact metal. Over the decades this cut has remained shiny and has not rusted. The artifact was found near London, Texas by a waterfall on Red Creek. This site is part of a large geographical zone called the Edwards Plateau and it primarily consists of Cretaceous rock. Several miles upstream, masses of shell fossils are found that match the fossils in this concretion. What is this odd little hammer? Its unique construction make it doubtful that this was a miner’s tool from recent times.

The hammer, which has become known as the London Artifact, is now part of the collection at Creation Evidences Museum where it has been extensively analyzed. The handle is permineralized and has a blackened coalified tip. The head is made out of a rare iron mixture with chlorine. Could this be a pre-Flood tool? Many scientists have expressed skepticism since the artifact was not found in situ by a professional. But the composition (chlorine fabricated with metallic iron) remains a puzzling enigma. We know that iron was a metal that was in production in the pre-Flood economy (Genesis 4:22). The extraordinary resistance to corrosion, even in the Texas humidity, points towards specialized metallurgy.

Could the rock concretion itself have been recently produced in the river?  It does not seem that the rock matrix surrounding the hammer is of modern origin. There is none of the riverbed gravels embedded in the concretion. Instead the sandy composition matches the Cretaceous source rock upstream. A careful search of the river itself reveals that there are no unabraded shells available in the riverbed (and indeed very few shells at all). Moreover, the approximately ten shells in the rock matrix show no signs of having been reworked, which would indicate a more recent concretion.”

Longevity and the Written Word

“Our technological development has only occurred as a result of an the ability to store and access large quantities of preexisting data. The knowledge possessed by any one person or even a hundred is insignificant in comparison to the libraries of previous learning that have now been obtained, and without which advancement to our level would not have happened. These libraries of knowledge did not begin to develop until the written word was invented, and no archaeological evidence of even the most primitive forms of writing have been discovered earlier than ancient Babylon which followed the tower of Babel.  Even several hundred years later, during the time of the Egyptians, only hieroglyphics were in use.

The development of symbolic language seemingly coincides with the decline in human longevity. Perhaps it was the shortened human lifespan that caused people to feel the need to write down their experiences or what had been learned. There had become a sense of urgency to preserve ones essence in some permanent form. It may have been this reduction in life expectancy more than anything else that induced the formation of the written word and ultimately the technological achievements we have made. Back when people lived to be 1000 years of age there was little need to archive knowledge. Most people would prefer to talk rather than write letters. If we could still talk to Galileo or Sir Isaac Newton, why would they bother to write down what they could more quickly say?”

The Genealogy of Seth

“And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him Seth, ‘For God has appointed another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed.’ And as for Seth, to him also a son was born; and he named him Enosh. Then men began to call on the name of the LORD’” (Gen. 4:25-26).

Through the lineage of Seth, God will fulfill His promises. “But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law" (Gal. 4:4).

We will now take a look at the genealogy of Seth as given in the fifth chapter of Genesis.  I am going to paraphrase the scripture to establish a time line for the antediluvian period of time.  We will begin with the birth of Adam which will be day one.  Keep in mind that Seth would have had many descendants; however, the Bible only lists the linage to Noah.

130 years – Adam begot Seth who lived 907 years. Adam was 130.

235 – Seth begot Enosh the grandson of Adam. Seth was 105 years when Enosh was born – Adam was 235.

325 - Enosh begot Cainan the great grandson of Adam. Enosh was 90 years when Cainan was born – Adam was 325 and Seth was 195 years old.

395 – Cainan begot Mahalalel the great great grandson of Adam.  Cainan was 70 years when Mahalalel was born –  Adam was 395, Seth was 265, and Enosh was 160 years old.

460 – Mahalalel begot Jared the third great grandson of Adam. Mahalalel was 65 years when Jared was born – Adam was 460, Seth was 330, Enosh was 225 and Cainan was 135 years old.

622 – Jared begot Enoch the fourth great grandson of Adam.  Jared was 162 years when Enoch was born – Adam was 622, Seth was 492, Enosh was 387, Cainan was 297 and Mahalalel was 227 years old.

687 – Enoch begot Methuselah the fifth great grandson of Adam.  Enoch was 65 years old when Methuselah was born – Adam was 687, Seth was 557, Enosh was 452, Cainan was 362, Mahalalel was 292, Jared was 227 years old. (Note: Some say that Methuselah name means “When he dies the end will come”. Some think that is this means the flood will come).

874 – Methuselah begot Lamech the sixth great grandson of Adam.  Methuselah was 187 years old when Lamech was born – Adam was 874, Seth was 744, Enosh was 639, Cainan was 549, Mahalalel was 479, Jared was 414 and Enoch was 252 years old.

930 – Adam died at the age of 930 years.

987 – Enoch was taken into heaven by the Lord without dying.

1042 – Seth died at the age of 912 years.

1056 – Lamech begot Noah the seventh great grandson of Adam.  Lameh was 182 years old when Noah was born – Adam is now dead, Seth was 926, Enosh was 821, Cainan was 731, Mahalalel was 661, Jared was 596, Enoch has gone to be with the Lord, and Methuselah is 182 years old.

1140 – Enosh died at the age of 905 years.

1235 – Cainan died at the age of 910 years.

1290 – Mahalalel died at the age of 895 years.

1422 – Jared died at the age of 962 years.

1556 – Noah begot Shem, Ham and Japheth – The Bible says that Noah lived five hundred year and begot Shem, Ham and Japheth – this would mean that they were born the same year. This would probably mean that they were triplets.

1651 – Lamech died at the age of 777 years.

1656 – Methuselah died at the age of 969 years.

1656 – The great worldwide flood – only Noah, his three sons and their wives were saved.  We don’t know if Methuselah died during the flood or if the flood came after he died.

Enoch

One of the persons in the linage of Seth was a man named Enoch.  “Enoch lived sixty-five years, and begot Methuselah. After he begot Methuselah, Enoch walked with God three hundred years, and had sons and daughters. So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him” (Gen. 5:21-24).

Enoch walked with God and God took him.  This implies that Enoch did not die but went to heaven to be with God. Enoch is a picture or a type of the rapture which will happen to the Church when Christ comes back for his bride.

In the third chapter of Luke’s gospel, he lists Enoch within the linage of Jesus “the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalalel, the son of Cainan” (Luke 3:27).

The writer of Hebrews, in his faith chapter, gives us even more information about the life of Enoch. “By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, ‘and was not found, because God had taken him’; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God. But without faith it is impossible to please Him; for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him“ (Heb. 11: 5-6).

Perhaps the most unusual reference to Enoch is given in the very short book of Jude, which was written by Christ’s half-brother.  “Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him” (Jude 13-15).

Where did Jude get this information?  This is the only reference to this information I have found written in the Bible; although, Zechariah does tell us that Christ will come and bring all the saints with him (Zech. 14:5).

The Holy Spirit may have revealed this information to Jude or perhaps he got it from the uncanonized book entitled, “The Book of Enoch”.  It seems that this book may have been in circulation during the time of Christ; although it was never canonized – it is considered apocryphal literature. What was in the book and where did it come from? Was it an old manuscript like the book of Job? The apocryphal literature also contains “The Book of Noah”, which was also included in the “Book of Enoch”.  Sections of the “Book of Enoch” and the “Book of Noah” were found in the “Dead Sea Scrolls”,  which gives them some credibility. Many believe that the Scrolls were hidden by the ancient Jewish sect called the Essenes. Since these documents were not canonized, it is not known how creditable they were. It should be noted that much of the Islamic writings on Enoch seems to have come from these documents. The entire book belongs to the period 130-100 B.C.

The following is a quote from Wikipedia: “Most Christian denominations and traditions may accept the Books of Enoch as having some historical or theological interest, but they generally regard the Books of Enoch as non-canonical or non-inspired.” (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Enoch ).

However, it seems that the early church fathers made use of the book. The following are a few short quotes. “The book of Enoch was written in the 2nd century B.C., and was popular for about 500 years and by many of the early Church Fathers as Athenagoras, Clement of Alexandria.” “That is, the book is not inspired by God. Over a hundred phrases in the New Testaments find precedents in the Book of Enoch. Tertullian quotes a passage from the Book of Enoch.” “Early church fathers such as Clement and Irenaeus considered it canon. We know that the early Church made use of the Book of Enoch, but it was all lost until recent times.” (Source: http://hotest-offers.blogspot.com...enoch-quoted-by-early-church.html).

“Augustine (354-430), who is very revered by the Roman Catholic Church establishment, confirmed that Enoch did write about Divine matters. Also, Tertullian (160-230), Clement of Alexandria (150-220), St. Atanasius, St. Jerome and others speak of Enoch's Book as preserved in Noah's Ark in the time of the deluge", that is, they considered it written by the Patriarch Enoch himself.”

“Furthermore, what St. Jude cites in his above quoted Letter is almost verbatim from the Ethiopic version of the Book of Enoch [Enoch 1:9]. The words "the seventh from Adam" may be also found in the same book [Enoch 60:8] as spoken by Noah, who refers to his grandfather in such manner. Enoch also referred to himself in such manner”. [Enoch 93:3] (Source: http://www.mgr.org/BookOfEnoch.html)

Have you ever raised the question, did God take Enoch into heaven for a special mission and that Enoch may have also returned to earth. The “Book of Enoch” implies that God used Enoch in dealing with the Nephilim problem. We read: “And the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.” There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown” (Gen. 6:3-4).

Although disputed, some scholars believe the Nephilim referred the offspring of fallen angels (demons) having sexual relations with the women of that time period. Their offspring were evil giants who populated the earth.  Enoch seems to have been used by God in resolving this problem – see quotes below.

We find reference to the term “sons of God” in Job Chapter two – they appear to be angels. “Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the Lord” (Job 2:1-2).

Some claim that it would be impossible for demons to have sexual relations with human women.  However, how do we know that it is possible for demons to change the characteristics and functions of their bodies. We know that angels and demons take on various physical forms.

Now let us look at some excerpts from “The book of Enoch”.

Quote:
“It happened after the sons of men had multiplied in those days, that daughters were born to them, elegant and beautiful. And when the angels, the sons of heaven, beheld them, they became enamoured of them, saying to each other, come, let us select for ourselves wives from the progeny of men, and let us beget children. Then their leader Samyaza said to them; I fear that you may perhaps be indisposed to the performance of this enterprise; and that I alone shall suffer for so grievous a crime. But they answered him and said; we all swear; and bind ourselves by mutual execrations, that we will not change our intention, but execute our projected undertaking. Then they swore all together, and all bound themselves by mutual execrations. Their whole number was two hundred, who descended upon Ardis, which is the top of mount Armon. That mountain therefore was called Armon, because they had sworn upon it, and bound themselves by these are the names of their chiefs: Samyaza, who was their leader, Urakabarameel, Akibeel, Tamiel, Ramuel, Danel, Azkeel, Saraknyal, Asael, Armers, Batraal, Anane, Zavebe, Samsaveel, Ertael, Turel, Yomyael, Arazyal. These were the prefects of the two hundred angels, and the remainder were all with them.  Then they took wives, each choosing for himself; whom they began to approach, and with whom they cohabited; teaching them sorcery, incantations, and the dividing of roots and trees. And the women conceiving brought forth giants” (Book of Enoch, 7:1-11).

“Whose stature was each three hundred cubits. These devoured all which the labor of men produced; until it became impossible to feed them; when they turned themselves against men, in order to devour them; and began to injure birds, beasts, reptiles, and fishes, to eat their flesh one after another, and to drink their blood. Then the earth reproved the unrighteous” (Book of Enoch, 7:11-15).

We must keep in mind that these must have been fallen angels since righteous angels would not behave this way.

Quote:
“Then the Most High, the Great and Holy One spoke, and sent Arsayalalyur  to the son of Lamech, [Noah]. Saying, Say to him in my name, Conceal yourself. Then explain to him the consummation which is about to take place; for all the earth shall perish; the waters of a deluge shall come over the whole earth, and all things which are in it shall be destroyed. And now teach him how he may escape, and how his seed may remain in all the earth. Again the Lord said to Raphael, Bind Azazyel hand and foot; cast him into darkness; and opening the desert which is in Dudael, cast him in there. Throw upon him hurled and pointed stones, covering him with darkness; There shall he remain forever; cover his face, that he may not see the light. And in the great day of judgment let him be cast into the fire. Restore the earth, which the angels have corrupted; and announce life to it, that I may revive it. All the sons of men shall not perish in consequence of every secret, by which the Watchers [angels] have destroyed, and which they have taught, their offspring. All the earth has been corrupted by the effects of the teaching of Azazyel. To him therefore ascribe the whole crime” (Book of Enoch, 10:1-12).

We need to remember that some of the demons remain free to do the work of Satan. However, some have been locked up.  Maybe you, like me, have wondered why some are locked up.  Let us look at what the apostle Peter said: “For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment; and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly” (2 Peter 2:4-5).

Jude also commented on the chained demons.  “And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day” (Jude 1:6).

Did Peter and Jude also consider the “The Book of Enoch” to have historical value? The Muslins also had a great respect for the “Book of Enoch”.

Quote:
“Before all these things Enoch was concealed; nor did any one of the sons of men know where he was concealed, where he had been, and what had happened.  He was wholly engaged with the holy ones, and with the Watchers in his days. I, Enoch, was blessing the great Lord and King of peace. And behold the Watchers called me Enoch the scribe. Then the Lord said to me: Enoch, scribe of righteousness, go tell the Watchers of heaven, who have deserted the lofty sky, and their holy everlasting station, who have been polluted with women. And have done as the sons of men do, by taking to themselves wives, and who have been greatly corrupted on the earth; That on the earth they shall never obtain peace and remission of sin. For they shall not rejoice in their offspring; they shall behold the slaughter of their beloved; shall lament for the destruction of their sons; and shall petition for ever; but shall not obtain mercy and peace” (Book of Enoch, 12:1-6).

“Then Enoch, passing on, said to Azazyel: You shalt not obtain peace. A great sentence is gone forth against you. He shall bind you; neither shall relief, mercy, and supplication be yours, on account of the oppression which you have taught; and on account of every act of blasphemy, tyranny, and sin, which you have discovered to the children of men. Then departing from him I spoke to them all together; And they all became terrified, and trembled” (Book of Enoch, 13:1-5).”

The book of Enoch has a lot more to say about the coming judgment to God’s people in the last days but we will not read further. Let us return to the Genesis account.

“Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. So the LORD said, ‘I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.’ But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD” (Gen. 6:5-8).

Noah

However, there was one man on the face of the earth who lived in a manner that found favor in God's sight. This man was Noah and since he was faithful, God showed him how a great flood would be sent to destroy the earth and its wickedness.  Noah was given instructions that would save him if he would simply accept them and carry them out.

“This is the genealogy of Noah. Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God.  And Noah begot three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. So God looked upon the earth, and indeed it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth” (Gen 5:9-12).

“And God said to Noah, ‘The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence through them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth. Make yourself an ark of gopherwood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and outside with pitch” (Gen. 5:13-14).

“’And behold, I Myself am bringing floodwaters on the earth, to destroy from under heaven all flesh in which is the breath of life; everything that is on the earth shall die. But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall go into the ark—you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you. And of every living thing of all flesh you shall bring two of every sort into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female. Of the birds after their kind, of animals after their kind, and of every creeping thing of the earth after its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive. And you shall take for yourself of all food that is eaten, and you shall gather it to yourself; and it shall be food for you and for them.’ Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did” (Gen. 5:17-22).

Like other true men of God, Noah demonstrated his faith with action.  He built an ark, gathered food and prepared for the coming storm.  Seven days before the first raindrops fell, God caused select pairs of birds and animals to seek the safety of the ark.  Noah received them into his custody, thus the stage was set for the rain of destruction.

So great was the price of sinning that when the flooding and destruction were over, there remained only Noah and those that were with him in the ark.  Thus ended the second dispensation in which man was ruled by moral conscience.  Only one man and his family were saved, perhaps, millions of people were destroyed.  Obviously, man's conscience failed to be an effective control over his actions.

The Flood

We usually think of the flood as a period of time when it rained for forty days.  But we read in Genesis verse eleven of chapter seven that: "The fountains of the great deep were broken up."  The word "deep" is translated from the Hebrew word "T'hom" which means an abyss of a surging mass of water such as a subterranean sea or underground reservoirs.  Before the flood, there may have been as much or more water under the land surface as there was on or above it.  Simultaneous with the rain from above, the surface of the earth was broken up by earthquakes and volcanic activity.  Giant tidal waves rolled across the surging waters.  With the earth being turned inside out, the lush vegetation and abundant animal life would have been turned under, and could have become the fuel deposits that we know today.

We read in Genesis verse two of chapter eight: "The fountains of the deep and the windows of heaven were also stopped."  God stopped the water from coming forth out of the ground and from above at the same time.  We need to realize that there was a lot huge amount of water standing upon the earth’s surface when God stopped the flood.

There were large, relatively empty, depressurized areas underneath the earth’s surface. What if the earth's surface collapsed due to the weight of the water above it?  Is it possible that the waters returned to their original containers – this time on top of the surface with the waters exposed to view as they form our great oceans of today?

You may also have the same question that I have had for many years.  How could the water rise high enough to cover all the highest mountains of the world?  Before the flood, mountains may not have existed or they may have been much lower than they are today. Also, after the flood and the resulting disturbances, the mountains may have continued to rise for many years as the earth settled into its new form.

Are there any physical evidences that these events actually took place?  Yes, we find fossils of fish high on mountaintops and fossils of other animals deep underneath the surface of the earth. Since scavengers usually destroy all remains, why have so many animal fossils been preserved from decay? Have you ever considered that the Grand Canyon has many features that indicate it was created by an earthquake?  Could the stark features of southern Utah be the result of wind and water erosion – water from shallow seas rushing into a new opening in the earth's surface that we now call the Grand Canyon?   The destruction of the flood could be the answer to many of the unanswered questions raised by both scientists and evolutionists.  There was a time in our past when geology was based upon acceptance of this great flood.  Even today, there is much excitement when a man-made object is found in a vein of coal (see above).

Legends of the Flood

To many people, the Flood, as recorded in Genesis, is only a myth or a legend.  However, we need to keep in mind that Jesus spoke of Noah, the sins of the people and the flood. “And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all” (Luke 17:26-27). Jesus did not consider the Flood a legend but expounded on it giving it creditability.

It has been said that “all legends are based upon some truth.” Although people do not always agree on the details of the flood as recorded in the Bible, there are many legends of the flood that are recorded by world civilizations.

“Native global flood stories are documented as history or legend in almost every region on earth. Old world missionaries reported their amazement at finding remote tribes already possessing legends with tremendous similarities to the Bible's accounts of the worldwide flood. H.S. Bellamy in Moons, Myths and Men estimates that altogether there are over 500 Flood legends worldwide."

"Ancient civilizations such as (China, Babylonia, Wales, Russia, India, America, Hawaii, Scandinavia, Sumatra, Peru, and Polynesia) all have their own versions of a giant flood)."

“Perhaps the second most important historical account of a global flood can be found in a Babylonian flood story in the Epic of Gilgamesh. When the Biblical and Babylonian accounts are compared, a number of outstanding similarities are found that leave no doubt these stories are rooted in the same event or oral tradition”
