Hi, everybody,
We have decided to close (or maybe sell the inventory to a man who wants to open a book store about 5 miles from here) the store that we have had since 1992. Business has been way down for a few years and we can't continue to fund it. Besides at 71 years old, John wants to have time to do other things, politically and as an activist. I'm hoping to start back writing, practicing more on the clarinet and guitar, and driving to Austin and San Antonio to see my sons, brother John and wife Birdie, etc.

Now that I'm in a regular shoe after the bunion surgery I had in April I can drive and maybe even take a jaunt down to Corpus Christi and Rockport.

Gosh, I didn't know of your writing talents and that you play the guitar.  You need to come visit us and you and Albert can sit and play your guitars all day when it is too hot outside to do anything but stay inside.   Smile

What type of writing do you do?  I have considered a forum here for writers who like to write short stories, articles or themes. What do you think of that idea.  CajuninKY and I were discussing that online the other day.  Would you possibly be interested in joining in on that project?

Mary, if you read this, I was thinking of you on this also.  I have watched your writing talents blossom over the years and think you would be ideal for this project in your ?SPARE? time!  What think you!!!!!!

Here is the article from Fran's local newspaper about the store closing.

Hard-to-Find Book Store is closing
Monday, January 03, 2011

After nearly 20 years offering used books on a variety of categories such as engineering, history and military, foreign language, science, religion, biographies and sheet music, The Hard-to-Find Book Store will close its doors.

“Our biggest sellers have been engineering, military history and Christian books,” said Fran Morris. “Also, when we started we wanted to fill the need for used sheet music for which there was a need in this part of Harris County.”

The idea of starting the book store was natural because of the love for books and needing a way to provide income during layoffs in the engineering field.

“I was tired of the ups and downs of the petro/chem industry, and after rejecting other ideas, Fran enthusiastically approved of my book store suggestion,” said John Morris, the other half of the owners. “I found a small building that was affordable on Avenue A. It was built in 1914 and in its life housed a car dealership, insurance company and at one time was home to the Humble Echo. We found newspapers dating to the 1940s in the rafters.”

Starting with 10,000 single titles, within two years, the number increased to 12,000, so the store moved. “That was short-lived due to landlord disagreements. “This is our fourth location and we’ve been here over 12 years,” said John.

“Business was good, and for a while we had three employees. A Humble High School student, Ash Kirk, was our first employee and Melanie White came on board in 2000 and, except for a couple of years, has been a mainstay for us. She knows as much about the business as we do,” said Fran.

They also sell books online and will continue that part of the business and look forward to the fun of finding new and interesting books.

“When you are in the book business and love books as we do, it can be difficult to see books you like and value go out the door,” said John. “When you have to lower your prices, and some are rare and unusual, to be more competitive, it can be difficult. Some wonderful books are going out the door for just a couple of dollars.”

“We have lived in the Humble area for nearly 30 years and many customers have become friends. We’ll still be around with a small office on Main Street, the same phone number and email address,” Fran said.
