WACO, Texas (BaptistPress)--A 6-member Baylor University sports ministry team led by athletics chaplain Wes Yeary went to Kenya in May to use sports as a tool to share the gospel of Jesus Christ.

“We’ve all seen the ‘Feed the Children’ commercials and stuff like that,” said Bryan Swindoll, a sophomore football player from Miami, Fla. “But until you’re actually confronted with it . . . There’s just so much that your mind can’t wrap itself around – the need and the suffering that goes on there. But right along with it is the joy that’s found in Christ.”

Joining Yeary and Swindoll on the trip were Kim Scott, director of Campus Recreation and the McLane Student Life Center; Tanna Burge, assistant strength and conditioning coach; soccer players Lindsey Johnson, Amanda McGrath, Lindsay “Lotto” Smith, Nicky Smith and Rachel Stepp; junior Melissa Jones from the women’s basketball team; sophomore Andrew Sumpter from football; athletic training graduate assistant Shellie Spiers; student manager Leah Capps; Baylor club soccer player Laura Smith; and Baylor student Brittany Berg.

“Since Spanish is my first language and I’ve spent a lot of time in South America, I would just naturally say that maybe I could do something more meaningful in one of these countries where my family has been,” Swindoll said. “I can speak the language, so I feel like I could be an effective vessel. Africa was just way out there for me. But I’m just glad I went, because it showed me that there’s a lot more need than just the places where I’ve gone.”
