Whatever is this world coming to?
No good, I think.
You have met Cupcake, my next door cat. What I might not have told you is that she has been living next door for about 5 years now. She has always been my garden cat, and follows me everywhere outside. I keep food for her handy, though she belongs next door, still there is extra food for her in my garage.
Well, as things happen, the young couple next door got a divorce last year, leaving the house to the man, and just leaving Cupcake to the elements. But Cupcake knew who fed her, so life resumed and all was fairly OK.
She continued to live in my garage in bad weather, or whenever she had a mind to, and I continued to feed her. She would go back and forth between the houses though, never forgetting where she first lived.
Now the young man next door tells me he's listing the house, can't keep up with the payments, can't afford the utilities, the insurance, and will be living with his father now until he can catch back up with his life. His father is not fond of cats.
"And what of Cupcake," I asked.
"Oh. The cat. I dunno and don't care. I have important things to worry about," he said.
Cupcake doesn't need to worry. It stormed this morning and when I went out looking for her, I heard her calling me from my garage. There she was, all dry and happy to have her food. She must have been there, sleeping in the rain all night long.
Cupcake doesn't have a thing to worry about, and I have told her so many times.
I wonder what ever happened to love and compassion and responsibility for those animal friends who ask so little of us.
We all have important things to worry about, and at the moment, Cupcake is mine.

AWWWW! I have wanted you to ask him to let you have her. What a lucky pair you are to have each other. Things have turned out right for the two of you after all.
It sounds like the guy next door is the unwanted one now. His father is probably wondering what in the world he is going to do with a boomarang kid. He will be lucky if he doesn't have to sleep in a neighbor's garage. So sad for them!
