Diamond in the Rough
Author Unknown.

A diamond in the rough, is a diamond sure enough.
For before it ever sparkles, it is made of diamond stuff!
Of course, someone must find it, or it never will be found,
And then, someone must grind it or it never will be ground!

And when it's found and when it's ground,
And when it's burnished bright
That diamond's everlastingly, just flashing out it's light!

Oh, teacher, in the Sunday School,
Don't say, "I've done enough!"
That worst boy in your class may be
A diamond in the rough.

Sermons We See
Edgar A. Guest

I'd rather see a sermon than hear one any day;
I'd rather one should walk with me than merely tell the way.
The eye's a better pupil and more willing than the ear;
Fine counsel is confusing, but example's always clear;
And the best of all the preachers are the men who live their creeds,
For to see good put in action is what everybody needs.

I soon can learn to do it if you'll let me see it done,
I can watch your hands in action, but your tongue too fast may run.
And the lecture you deliver may be very wise and true,
But I'd rather get my lessons by observing what you do;
For I might misunderstand you and the high advice you give,
But there's no misunderstanding how you act and how you live.

One good man teaches man, men believe what they behold;
One deed of kindness noticed is worth forty that are told.
Who stands with men of honor learns to hold his honor dear,
For right living speaks a language which to everyone is clear.
Though an able speaker charms me with his eloquence, I say,
I'd rather see a sermon than to hear one, any day.

The Virtuous Teacher
Shirley Smith.
Adapted from Proverbs 31

It is hard to find good teachers,
They are worth more than rubies.
The Sunday School Superintendent trusts them completely.
With them, a Sunday School class has everything it needs.
They possess a positive attitude about Sunday School
And supports its functions and activities.
They participate regularly in training opportunities
And strive to be the best teacher they can be.
They are willing to study and research
And learn through books, commentaries, and other resources.
They are never late for Sunday School.
They make certain the room is prepared.
They never "play it by ear".
They care about the class members
And they are willing to write, call, and visit.
They are eager and enthusiastic about each lesson
Because their preparation has been thorough.
They are committed to excellence
And begin preparations early in the week.
They are not afraid to try new teaching techniques,
And they focus on the needs and learning styles of everyone.
They know the spiritual condition of their students
And they know how to lead people to Christ.
They are striving to grow in Christ every day
Through daily Bible study and prayer.
They are regarded as people of Integrity
And are committed to honoring God.
Their advice, teachings, and instructions are followed
Because they model their beliefs in daily living.
They are dependable and diligent
And can be counted on to fulfill their duties.
They are honored, respected, and praised by all.
People say, "They are a reflection of the Master."
Their true beauty is faithfulness and obedience
Because they fear the Lord.
They need to be told sincerely and often,
"Well done, good and faithful servant!"
(Matthew 25:23).

The Psalm of a Good Teacher
Henry Van Dyke

The Lord is my Teacher;
I shall not lose the way to wisdom,
He leadeth me in the lowly path of learning,
He prepareth a lesson for me every day.
He findeth the clear fountain of instruction -
Little by little He showeth me the beauty of truth.

The world is a great book that He has written,
He turneth the leaves for me slowly;
They are all inscribed with images and letters -
His voice poureth light on the pictures and the words.

Then am I glad when I perceive His meaning,
He taketh me by the hand to the hill-top of wisdom;
In the valley, also, He walketh beside me,
And in the dark places He whispereth in my heart.

Yea, though my lesson be hard, it is not hopeless,
For the Lord is very patient with His slow scholar,
He will wait awhile for my weakness -
He will help me to read the truth through tears -
Surely thou wilt enlighten me daily by joy and by sorrow,
And lead me at last, O Lord, to the perfect knowledge of Thee.

The Quitter
Author Unknown.

I have taught a class for many years
Bore many burdens ~ toiled through tears;
But Folks don’t notice me a bit,
I’m so discouraged ~ I’ll just quit.

Sometime ago I joined the choir
That many souls I might inspire;
But folks don’t seemed moved a bit,
So what use to sing? I’ll just quit.

I’ve labored long in mission work
And not a task did ever shirk;
But folks have talked a little bit,
And I won’t stand it! I think I’ll quit.

Christ’s cause is hindered everywhere
And folks are dying in despair.
The reason why? Just a bit;
The church is full of folks who quit.

Teacher’s Prayer
Pearl May Boyd

Dear Father God, our souls inspire
With lofty thought and sacred fire,
That we may teach these children dear
Who come to us from year to year.

May we control with loving hand
Each little restless, learning band,
And ever give us strength to lift and love.

The potter molds the plastic clay,
So we the souls of children sway.
Our God, great strength to us impart;
That we may guide each trusting heart.

Our Special School
Author Unknown

In a cozy little corner
Come and meet our special clan
Here we join in work and laughter
Each one doing what we can.

Often teasing and observing
In his chair sits faithful John
He has good imaginations
Likes his picture books & fun.

Communitcating with her eyes
Ruthie wants to learn and know
On her chair or in our arms
We have learned to love her so.

Ivan’s grin and love for songs
Adds a spice that warms our day
Growing Amos smiles a greeting
He and John are pals at play.

Christie’s specialty is music
Frequently he talks or sings
Annie likes to cut out pictures
Hug her dolls, or ride on swings.

Lively Henry tries our patience
But he has a loving heart
His sweet smile and puzzle piecing
Are of school a unique part.

Arie colors, plays she’s “Mother”
Or sometimes pretends to teach
Elam left us, but his memory
Lingers yet within our reach.

Navigating her own wheel chair
Katie helps us clean or play
Loveable and fond of singing
She’s a sunbeam in our day.

Helping teach these special children
Brought rich blessings and reward
For this priv’ledge and sweet mem’ries
We give honor to the Lord.

The Way Into the City
Fay Inchfawn. .

It seems no use for me to go
To teach in Sunday-school, and so
I think I shall give up my class;
The children only come to pass
An idle hour. They talk and play,
And nearly wear my life away.

‘It is quite useless to prepare
A Bible talk, for no one there
Will listen. Just this afternoon
They hummed a little careless tune,
And giggled when I tried to tell
Of Moses. Yes, and Elsie fell
Right off the form, while everyone
Laughed at the clever thing she’d done!

‘And when they’d quite got over that
They stared and talked about my hat,
They snuggled up to me to press
Their sticky hands upon my dress.
They sniffed my roses, stroked my fur,
And said it smelt of lavender,
Till I was wearied out. Alas!
I really must give up that class!”

What! Give it up? Just when you’re getting in!
But that would be a sin!
Ear Gate is not the only way
Of entering Child-Soul City -- nay!
There’s Feel Gate, too!

Remember, when they scramble over you,
And crease your blouse, and tread upon your toes,
It would be very easy just to close
That little gate -- to push them off, to frown,
To freeze them with a look, to talk them down.

You’ve entered Eye Gate! Yes, with your red roses!
They will forget, maybe, your thoughts on Moses,
But they’ll remember long that you were sweet,
And that you nodded to them in the street.

Oh, they may stumble at the Law, but under grace
They shall see Christ through something in your face.
For, as you traverse some unlikely way,
On some unlooked-for, unexpected day-
Yes, comrading with love and patience that endures,
The freedom of the city shall be yours.
God's Warrior

I want to teach my students more than lessons in a book:
I want to teach them deeper things that people overlook--

The value of a rose in bloom, its use and beauty too
A sense of curiosity to discover what is true;

How to think and how to choose the right above the wrong,
How to live and learn each day and grow up to be strong;

To teach them always how to gain in wisdom and in grace,
So they will someday make the world a brighter, better place.

Lord, let me be a friend and guide to give these minds a start
Upon their way down life's long road, then I'll have done my part.
