Want some cheap plant markers?? Try the plastic knives in disposable picnic cutlery... I'm going to do this and see how it works. I thought it was a great idea!

A great idea! I never thought of that! Way cheaper than the ones you buy as plant markers. (entering this in the "why didn't I think of that?" category).

Be sure to use paint pens and not magic markers. The magic markers magically disappear soon. I haven't tried them with paint pens yet but I lost track of lots of my names by using the knives with magic markers. I am using Venetian blinds cut off now. I just stick the end that I have cut off at an angle and put them in my potted plants. I use the paint pens with the blinds. I also wire them (with the green plastic covered wire) to bamboo stakes so they aren't at the ground level to get destroyed by weed-eaters, covered with dirt and other things. I use the twist tie on the roll to tie them to the inside branches of bushy shrubs or young tree saplings so that the dogs don’t pull them off. So far it is successful. I have only been doing that a year however.

I use my Dymo LetraTag label-maker. It prints my words out on sticky-backed strips, and I put those on the plant markers. Over a year outside now, and they are still plenty readable.
