Pawpaws

Pawpaws grow wild here and do very well. I really enjoy them made into bread or fritters. They taste like a cross between bananas and persimmons.

This year was so dry we didn't get any pawpaws. They started out well but dried up.

That was a great shot.  Would you believe that I have never actually seen one for real?  Cool! We used to sing a little song when I was in elementary school titled, "Way Down Yonder in the Paw Paw Patch."

"Picking Up Paw Paws and Putting Them in a Basket."  I sang that but had no idea what I was singing about.

I had never seen them until we moved here to Biggs.

Cajun, you are from Louisiana and grew up there.  I lived there during my growing up years and it was in Louisiana that I was singing the little Paw Paw song.  I think that is funny that neither of us had ever seen them.

The Paw Paw Patch

Where, oh where is dear little Danny?
Where, oh where is dear little Danny?
Where, oh where is dear little Danny?
Way down yonder in the paw-paw patch.

Come on girls, let's go find him,
Come on girls, let's go find him,
Come on girls, let's go find him,
Way down yonder in the paw-paw patch.

Pickin' up paw-paws, put 'em in the basket,
Pickin' up paw-paws, put 'em in the basket,
Pickin' up paw-paws, put 'em in the basket,
Way down yonder in the paw-patch.

Where, oh where is dear old Nellie?
Where, oh where is dear old Nellie?
Where, oh where is dear old Nellie?
Way down yonder in the paw-paw patch.

Come on boys, let's go find her,
Come on boys, let's go find her,
Come on boys, let's go find her,
Way down yonder in the paw-paw patch.

Pickin' up paw-paws, put 'em in the basket,
Pickin' up paw-paws, put 'em in the basket,
Pickin' up paw-paws, put 'em in the basket,
Way down yonder in the paw-patch.

Where, oh where is dear little Jimmy?
Where, oh where is dear little Jimmy?
Where, oh where is dear little Jimmy?
Way down yonder in the paw-paw patch.

Come on girls, let's go find him,
Come on girls, let's go find him,
Come on girls, let's go find him,
Way down yonder in the paw-paw patch.

Pickin' up paw-paws, put 'em in the basket,
Pickin' up paw-paws, put 'em in the basket,
Pickin' up paw-paws, put 'em in the basket,
Way down yonder in the paw-patch.

Very interesting stuff. Did not know the seeds were narcotic. Maybe when I am feeling down I can chew a few pawpaw seeds. LOL I know there are pawpaw trees in La but I never saw any.

We always used to sing "put them in your pocket", but that does not make sense to me now, knowing what a ripe pawpaw is like. Smile Very mushy. I made some Amish Friendship bread and put the pulp in instead of the applesauce. It was great!!

I think I remember hearing that song when I was a kid. There is a town in Michigan southwest of where I live called Pawpaw, but I can't say I ever saw a pawpaw.

Amazing that none of us who has posted had seen a real one until recently.  (I still haven't!)I used to wonder what in the heck they were. They were in a patch instead of an orchard in the song. From what i gather now, the kids were supposed to be picking the fallen fruit off the ground, right?????
