We got word this morning from a pastor we know, that his son was killed in a car wreck. The son was in the military and had just spent 10 days home on leave with his family. The other airman in the vehicle is in the hospital. Please pray for both families and the injured man to have a full recovery.

How terrible. I will most assuredly be praying for them. Does the pastor have other children or was this his only child?

I believe they have 2 others and I think this was his oldest, named Noah. We have been out of touch for years and just recently reestablished contact. He (the pastor) was a neighbor of ours, one of 4 boys in a family down the road from us. He was a high school or college kid when our kids were in Jr High. Later, he became a youth pastor in Alaska and my hubby and I moved into his trailer (owned by the church) temporarily while we looked for a house to buy.

It was a good deal for him, he got his phone messages (in the days before answering machines) and occasionally got his laundry done if it happened to be in the washing machine when I needed to use it, and he got hot meals on a regular basis even through I did make him eat brocolli. Shamed him into it! He had to set a good example because our son was in his youth group. Years later, on a Christmas card, he wrote that he still liked brocolli.

Then we lost contact again, we knew he was married and had children, pastored churches in several states, and then about a month ago we got an email from him. We are even in the same state! We haven't seen him since we left Alaska so I am not really up to date on his family.

I am reminded of a saying we had when I was a kid. "Make new friends. Keep the old. One is silver and the other gold." It sounds like you have lots of love and memories in common with this family. I hope they will manage to adjust soon to this terrible tragedy in their lives. It would be nice if you could see each other again since you do live in the same state.

Yes, it would be nice to see them again. Due to the weather and travel conditions it is unlikely that we would be able to make about an 800 mile round trip to attend the memorial service.

I was reminded that our first contact with the father of the family was when my hubby was the junior boys Sunday school teacher. We had sledding parties and boating trips for them, so it wasn't just Sunday morning contacts. Many of the boys in the class were from broken homes, so they needed a father figure or at least a big brother.
