Our racking pony mare, Granny, finally had her foal on 6/6. I had nearly given up. We knew when we bought her there was a possibility of her being bred but her former owner did not know what she might be bred to or just when she was due. She kept getting heavier and heavier but not making any milk. We were beginning to worry about her but thankfully everything turned out fine. She gave birth to a healthy stud foal who looks very much like her. He will also be a racking horse but I'm thinking he will be very much taller than her. When he was born his back legs were as long as her front legs. He is quite the character. He is several hours old in this pic.

Thanks, Smokey. He is really a character. It's the first time we've raised a foal so we are reading a lot and picking the brains of all our friends who have had the pleasure. Lots of it is just common sense so it's not overwhelming. We took him down the road today on a lead rope. He does really well considering he only made 3 weeks old yesterday. He is growing well.

Tug is 8 weeks old now and doing very well. Growing like a bad weed. He works well on the halter but still pulls a bit. I put him in a different stall away from his mom for about 20 minutes today. Beginning to get him used to being away from her. I think we will wean him at 3 to 3 1/2 months. Granny was thin when we got her and she was already in foal. We have not been able to get much weight on her so we will likely wean him early to help her. I don't know if we will keep her. She is quick to rear up. She has a sight deficit and I'm sure that is the reason for the rearing but knowing that does not change things. I am not comfortable letting my DGS ride her like she is. There is a possibility we might keep her as a light cart pony if she works well in that capacity. May just let her go.

We are in the process of weaning Tug. It's usually not done quite this early but Granny was losing more weight than we liked and with winter quickly approaching we wanted to get her back up to speed. We took her to the old farm and turned her out to graze in the knee deep grass 24/7. She's been there for 2 weeks and already looking much better. Tug eats fine and hasn't lost a single pound. He is taking the weaning well. He was understandably upset at first. He jumped the gate to the lot to get back into the barn. Or I should say he got hung up on top of the gate but he didn't hurt himself. He was looking for his momma. He has settled down nicely and is getting to know the other horses in the barn. He is still growing like a bad weed.

He has really turned out well. I am glad mama is getting a break from nursing since winter will be here before you know it. Thank you for posting those pictures to show us what a pretty horse he is.

Here is the latest picture of Tug. This was taken 2 weeks before Thanksgiving. A week later "Uncle" Buddy was taken to the farm so now Tug doesn't have a pasture pal. It has been too nasty, wet and cold for him to be let out anyway so he really hasn't suffered for Buddy's move. I do let him out in the barn hall for exercise. He is such a pill. LOL

Here is the latest picture of Granny. She is really filling out since we weaned Tug and moved her to the farm. Grazing is the best way to keep a horse if you have the room.

Tug is 11 months old now and is growing into an impressive little horse. He is still very cooperative and willing to learn. We have had the itty bitty pony saddle on him and taken him for a walk to let him feel it. He didn't mind a bit. He is going to make a great horse for a child or a small adult.

A week later we decided to up the ante. DH put the saddle back on Tug and Knock got on him. DH led him for just a little way up the road and Tug acted like he was ridden every day. I cannot tell you how impressed I am with the little guy. He is really special.
