The growing mortgage debt and health-care costs are blamed. The rate for over 55 Americans is now 39% compared to 29% for the general population

The trend is toward self-funded or self-funded and employer supplemented 401K plans for retirement. Fewer companies offer pensions and many that offered pensions in the past are dropping them.
