Have You Ever Wondered?

And He took him aside from the multitude, and put His fingers in his ears, and He spat and touched his tongue.  Then, looking up to heaven, He sighed, and said to him, "Ephphatha," that is, "Be opened."  Immediately his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke plainly.  Mark 7:33-35

I've often wondered why Jesus did it this way.  People were healed just by touching his garment.  Others by his words.  This one was different somehow.  Obviously, it's not for the sake of the people because he took the boy/man aside or away from the multitude.

Was there some type of spiritual stronghold causing the deafness and muteness that went beyond a physical impediment?  Maybe.  Or was it because the man couldn't hear the words of Jesus and this Jesus overcame by interacting with him this way?  Could be.

What do you think?

I also find it interesting that Jesus twice used spit, that I remember, in a healing.  There's the other time he formed mud with his spit and rubbed it on the eyes on a blind man.  Can you imagine how you'd react if someone tried this on you?

Those are good thoughts that probably none of us ever considered. Thanks from giving us that food for thought.
I think that most of us would ask for some kind of oil to be used instead of silava.

Maybe since they weren't as germ knowledgable back then it wouldn't have mattered.  I know that my mother used to "spit shine" us out in public if she saw something on our faces that didn't need to be there.  Smile  That never bothered me but of course it was MY mother and didn't seem the least bit unusual. Maybe the relationship aspect of it could have entered into the fact that Jesus used his own silava.

Gee, I've never though of anything like this before!!!!

The word "spit", strongs #4429 is used in a total of 3 verses. Mark 7:33, Mark 8:23, and John 9:6
According to strongs, it means to spit.

I seem to recall that spit in those days had some medicinal value according to William Barclay I believe.

I have never thought about it? It is a very interesting question.

Mark 7:33-36

Jesus probably wanted him not to tell in order to discourage people from coming to Him just for healing.  Also others were looking for something to cast doubt and unbelief on Him, so He wanted them to keep it a secret.  His primary purpose was for spiritual healing not physical healing.  The physical healing simply served to establish His claim to be the promised Messiah.

Did He tell him not to speak of it?
