When using a mechanical hand spreader, it's easy to tell where you've already seeded or fertilized if you first add a little flour to your mix -- regular white flour used for baking. Then, when you're spreading, you can see where the seeds and fertilizer are landing. And, flour won't hurt your lawn; it washes right off.
