Conversations with Gardeners

Conversations with Gardeners...

"Remember that gardeners generally want to share knowledge and hear your comments, so don't be shy about starting a conversation. Like artists, most gardeners want to know how their creation communicates with the viewer. See if you can discover the spirit and vision behind the garden and reflect on what is moved within you." ~ Suzanne Edison

"To garden, you open your personal space to admit a few, a great many, or thousands of plants which exude charm, pleasure, beauty, oxygen, conversation, friendship, confidence, and other rewards should you succeed in meeting their basic needs. This is why people garden. It can be easy but challenging, and the rewards are priceless."
~ Tom Clothier American amateur gardener & host of the gardening web site, Garden Walk and Talk from Gardening Philosophy

I already found two homes with lots of plants that I KNOW I will have to visit (in TX). I'm not afraid to approach them as I know how proud I am when someone compliments me on my yard. Smile

Good for you, Carla. I feel the same way when someone wants to see my gardens. I must admit that if I have seen someone working in several gardens that I have wanted to see, I have approached them and started talking about how much I like them. They have always been flattered and offered me a tour. Often they have given me plants also.

You know you are talking to another gardener if you say "I am going to divide....insert any plant name...this week" and their eyes light up, their face begins to flush, and you suddenly have their complete and undivided attention as they shift from one foot to the other in eager anticipation of the next words they hope to hear you utter...Would you like some?

The more plant names you mention dividing the more rapidly they begin to flush...Mention something highly desirable and they will seem to be wagging their tails in anticipation. Please note, it is cruel at this point to fail to follow through with an offer and will earn you the title of "plant tease" or worse.

I love that description, Zany. All of us plantaholics have been on both ends of that situation, most likely. I know that I have. A plant lover can always make room for those very special plants, can't we? I always "grab" what is available with the idea that I can share with my kids or friends later if I can't find space enough for my "haul".
