Before you ever toss a string of Christmas lights, remove all the bulbs to use as spares and also the 2 tiny batteries out of the plug.
Many times when a string of lights goes out, all it needs is a couple new batteries in the plug part. I found that out this past Christmas.
Take a close look at the plug (s). The one you use to plug in has a tiny "drawer" you can open up with the tip of a knife. Just pull it open towards the prongs. In there are 2 tiny batteries, no bigger than 1/3". They need replacing about every 2 years. Moisture gets in there and they burn out and get all cloudy. You can buy them on cards in the beginning of the Christmas season where they sell the replacement bulbs. After that, they are hard to find.
Have you ever noticed when you buy a new string of lights it comes with a little plastic-wrapped package of a couple of extra bulbs. a "blinker" and 2 of these batteries.
