Bale GardeningHi,
I thought you all might be interested in my hay bale garden. It has been fun and it really fits the bill for me for several reasons. 1) I can't churn up any ground here because the first rain washes it all into the creek. That is where our house seems destined to end up as well. LOL 2) I don't have much room here on this street corner so this type of raised bed gardening makes it possible to have a bit of produce in a small area. 3) I'm getting older and the bales eliminate a lot of bending over. Always a plus.
I have tomatoes, yellow squash, eggplant, peppers and cucumbers. They were slow to get started due to cold nights but they are coming along well now. The slugs have nearly killed my peppers and my cucumbers are not looking great but they do have fruit on them.

Put some beer in little lids and put them around the area for the slugs at night. You will probably get a kick out of how terribly guilty I have always felt buying the beer. I used to sneak in and out of the store like a criminal on the run but I have gotten better at it in the last few years. Now I just feel like hanging a sign around my neck saying, "I am not going to drink this. It is for my snails and slugs." Then I can just imagine someone whispering to someone else, "Sure! We bet it is!!!!"

My bale gardening did really well. I have a raised bed now but I am going to put in a few bales in the spring also. I already have the bales and will plant them asap in the spring. I have had to change to SFG now and I will start a new thread on it. I hope I can get some pics to post.

Smokey is completely clueless. Do the plants grow IN the hay, or do you put dirt on/in the bale for the plants to grow in?

You put just a handful of dirt in the slit you plant them in. The roots grow all through the bale itself. As the bale decomposes it creates nitrogen for the plants. I'm looking forward to bale gardening again.

We did a little of that one year and it worked well. Don't know why we haven't done it since. Probably because our senior minds just forgot all about it once summer had come and gone. Must try that again next spring!!!
