Animal crackers at midnightANIMAL CRACKERS AT MIDNIGHTby Smokey the dog I was at work tonight and in my travels I found a package of animal crackers in one of the vending machines. I thought to myself, "Wow I haven't had animal crackers in a long while!" So I bought them. I didn't worry about the trans fat content, or calories either, I just enjoyed them. I thought about it afterwords, and you know, animal crackers are really not the best cookies, but there was something about the remembered taste. It just felt good, like I had experienced a memory of enjoying animal crackers as a child. Sometimes it's good to go back to things from our youth, spontaneity and innocence for example. It's too easy to drift away from our youthful exuberance in the Christian life too. We get bored, we have a "job" to do. Maybe we could pick up the Bible and read a chapter. Maybe we'll say, "Boy that felt good." |

Animal crackers are not about the taste, they are about the shapes. Bite off a head, nibble a foot, crunch half a hippo or an elephant all at one time, (wow, what a mouthful). It's about fun! It takes us back to our childhood, a much simpler time when which animal to eat first was a hard decision. Some of them were plain crackers, and some had frosting and little candy spots, but there was something about that box with the little rope handle. It was unique and a little kid could carry that box around and all the other kids would want one too. I wonder if today's kids have that same fascination with animal crackers....? |

Anyone remember the song, "Animal Crackers", that Shirley Temple sang in one of her early movies?
Those are great memories, aren't they? Did any of you scrape the icing off of oreo cookies with your teeth first before gobbling down the cookie part? Also, did you put the cookie that had the hole in the center on your finger and eat around the edges? I did all that and I bet some of the rest of you did too!
