The devotionals of Mrs. Charles E. Cowman that are known as "Streams in the Desert"...This first edition was published in 1925 and the wording is preserved as originally written. Connotations of words may have changed over the years and are not meant to be offensive.
After 25 years of fruitful labour in Japan and Korea, the angel of pain struck Rev.C.E.Cowman, the doctor’s diagnosis was: “Worn out”. The result was that he was transferred from the din of the battle to the seclusion of the sick chamber; from the glow and glory of the work of the sick chamber; from the glow and glory of the work he loved so dearly, to the utter abandonment of it all. Would his faith fail now at this crucial point? If God were to give him songs in the night, He must first make the night. The billows which in their approach threatened to submerge him as they came in, lifted him to heaven for which he was bound.
If the great adversary had desired that the stroke should mar or bruise God’s chosen instrument, to arrest God’s work, he was certainly disappointed for Charles Cowman stood still, beneath the shadow of the Cross.
All these wonderful devotionals were compiled by Mrs. Cowman. This daily devotional has received such tremendous response from all over the world that it has gone into many editions.

Quote from Zondervan
Mrs. Charles E. Cowman
L. B. Cowman worked as a pioneer missionary with her husband in Japan and China from 1901 to 1917, during which time they helped found the Oriental Missionary Society. When Mr. Cowman's poor health forced the couple to return to the United States, Mrs. Cowman turned her attention to caring for her husband until his death six years later. Out of Mrs. Cowman's experiences and heartbreak came her first book, Streams in the Desert, followed by its companion Springs in the Valley. During the next twenty-five years, Mrs. Cowman inspired several nationwide Scripture distribution campaigns and wrote seven more books. Finally, on Easter Sunday in 1960, at the age of ninety, Mrs. Cowman met face-to-face the God she had served so faithfully for nearly a century
