Serious Stuff First

Almost half of college-age Americans have mental health disorders ranging from alcohol or nicotine dependence to obsessive-compulsive behavior, says a Columbia University study based on about 5,000 face-to-face interviews.

Medical and surgical residents in hospitals are too exhausted and sleep deprivation could lead to serious medical mistakes according to a report of the Institute of Medicine.

Workers have seen their 401K and retirement plans drop in value by up to 50% or more in some cases. The good news is that the stock market is about 50% as likely to go up as it is to go down further, according to many respected financial advisors. The shocking news to some people will be that it will require a 100% gain to bring retirement balances that have fallen by 50% back to where they were before the current down market began.

It is quite likely that even the least informed in the stock market have heard that there is a bear market in place now.
Walmart is the stock of choice of large mutual fund managers during these difficult times. Walmart started in small towns and later started to move into larger cities. Observers were known to comment that Walmart would fail when it had to compete with K-Mart. They must have done something right since a large percentage of Walmart customers drive past a K-Mart store to shop at Walmart.

Now the Silly Stuff

A Washington Post report says that acorns aren't being produced by oak trees this year in some parts of Maryland.,New York, Virginia and other states. Some experts say the shortage of acorns is frustrating squirrels. Those same experts say that this is part of the normal boom and bust in nature. Now, all they have to do is tell the squirrels to be cool and things will be O.K.

Bet you feel better just reading such stuff, right?   Smile

You know Al, they could just tell the squirrels the nuts are all in Washington!

The squirrels are too smart for that, Smokey.  They know that all the nuts in Washington are ROTTEN!

Sunday Nuggets - The Serious:

You should take no part in any activity that does not honor God’s name. That is true, but not easy to do.

People pray that God bless and be involved in things in their lives. If things go well, people thank God for his blessing. If things go badly, they may wonder where God was and they may wonder why he did not answer their prayers.

Consider Jesus and the Apostle Paul, two people who lived on this earth and suffered sorrow, heartbreak, and finally death. Where was God and did God not answer their prayers?

Could it possibly be that we don’t always recognize when we get an answer to our prayers?  Could it be that we are not taught to rejoice when we are persecuted for His name sake. Did He not say that great was our reward?

Do you really want God to grant your requests and wishes or would you prefer He bless you, according to his will, even when you do not understand?

It really comes down to a simple question; do we want God to answer our requests or do we just want Him to bless us?

Between Thanksgiving and Christmas Nuggets

The Serious:

During a recent interview by Tom Brokaw, the question was put to Barack Obama if it made sense to put taxes on gasoline to bring the price up to $4:00/ Gallon in order to make people buy more fuel efficient cars, help the planet, etc. In his answer, he said that people were facing job losses, a weak economy, etc. and he did not think it made sense do something like this RIGHT NOW.

Give this comment some thought.

The Silly:

When geese fly, they always fly in a “V” formation. There are wind flow advantages, etc. for such a formation. If the lead goose gets tired, it will drop back and another one will replace it. There is another, up until now, unexplained oddity in the “V” formation and that fact is that one leg of the “V” is always longer than the other one.  The very simple reason is “THERE ARE MORE GEESE IN THAT LEG OF THE “V”.

Question of the Day:

What heart problem has never been visually seen by a Doctor?  Heartbreak.

Who would have thunk it?

Happiness can be transmitted like a germ through social networks such as friends, family,
co-workers, and neighbors a study by Harvard Univ. found. The research suggests that a happy person who lives within a mile could boost your odds of being happy by 25%. A cheerful next door neighbor increases happiness by 34%. According to my idea only, moving away from a moody, unhappy next door neighbor should increase your odds of happiness by 100%. (I just threw that in for kicks Smile )

Here is a short "Shaggy Dog story".

While renewing my car registration, the lady who was waiting on me asked if the weather was still cold outside. I assured her that it was cold indeed outside. Her concern was her Beagle dog that refused to sleep inside the house, and instead would demand to be let out so it could sleep in the dog house. All day long, inside the house was quite O.K., thank you. As soon as night approached, it was a fight to go outside. The lady said that she just could not put enough rugs, quilts, etc. in the dog house to make her feel the dog would not get too cold. To solve the problem, she boards the dog at the local Kennel during cold weather.
I would say that she has a dogone problem. (A meager attempt at humor)

A road sign I saw near Baton Rouge

WOW: Life is good when you walk so close to the head Tiger and all the players.

I feel that LSU now has a very capable coaching staff. I think that was a large part of the poor performance this past year.

Looks like they will land a good class of recruits this year.

Enjoy your cap, not everybody has such a treasure.

I think they did well getting to a bowl game while playing all year "without" a QB. If the last two games of the season were any indicator, they have a good one now so this season should be a good one. We will love them either way but we hope for a great season.  Love dem tigers!
