What do you plant more of? Veggies or Flowers?

May 05, 2005
This is my first year planting veggies - in probably 5 years. I just got this amazing "itch" to plant stuff. And plant I did! There are watermelons, tomatoes, yellow squash, cucumbers, radishes, canteloupes and I'm about to start the green beans and black eyed peas.

Plant for plant, though, the flowers win out. I have so many flowers planted, I don't know if I could even count them. I've easily doubled what I had last year, and that was a decent amount. I have added twice the number of herbs, too.

Isn't gardening just an awesome delight of the senses?

Mine are overwhelming flowers, flowers and more flowers!!!! When people who have never been to my back yard come by, the overwhelming comments are something like this, "Oh, my goodness, look at all the beautiful flowers!" I love that!!!! I have been refusing to let folks come lately because we are in such a mess with the new back room construction and the new bricked patio area we are constructing that I don't want them to see the mess. The only folks to see it this year have been the plumbers, the electrician, the carpenters and a friend who is helping with the planning. The comments from these guys is the same as from my garden loving friends. By the time we get all our mess finished it will probably be getting into the drought time when little is blooming. Oh, well! At least the construction folks are enjoying it.

I've planted so much in my flower beds that I'm already having to trim things back and consider moving some things. A friend of mine just left earlier this evening with dragon's blood sedum, yellow-blooming ice plant, creeping jenny, silver thyme and something else, I think. Smile Everything is just growing like crazy. Even my tomatoes are about 3" across already. (Sadly, I don't even like them, but Brent and Kaley will be thrilled).

Sounds like your garden is growing beautifully, Carla. Isn't it fun???? I hope you will post some pictures for us to see. Wish that I lived nearby so that I could leave with some of those plants also. Boo Hoo!

But where would you plant them? I know, you'd find a place, just like the rest of us plantaholics.

I plant more vegies because we can eat them, and that helps the grocery budget as well as having absolutely fresh and healthy organic food, but I am enlarging another flower bed.
