SMOKEY'S TESTIMONY

The way I came to Christ is a long and winding tale. A shortened version follows;

I was dragged to church as a kid, (an american baptist church) at least that's the way it felt at the time. Neither me or my brother wanted to go to church. It certainly made me feel uncomfortable, and the other kids made fun of the way we dressed. We stopped going after my mom died when I was 11. God was fathful though. Our Boy Scout troop met in a Methodist church, and I remember being invited to vacation Bible school at a Southern Baptist church near our house. I had a friend in high school who was a Christian, and she witnessed to me in a low key way and invited me to a youth for Christ rally. I asked God to forgive my sins one night after that, but told no one.
I know God did come into my life then. The reason know that was that the next school year was the best year I had in high school. The I went away to college, (MSU) and drifted away, the usual college stuff, drinking swearing and sex. Yet God was faithful. I kept bumping into Christians. In the dorm, the cafeteria, even in my fraternity! (Steve was the frat "Christian" He was involved in Campus Crusade.) I received Christ as savior about 10 months after graduating from college when a co-worker shared with me on our lunch break at 3:00am one morning. I was working for a contract security company on the midnight shift at the time. That was in 1976. The man who shared with me was fired within a couple months, and I didn't get much discipleship. It was just me and my pocket New Testament. But God was faithful, and seemingly out of the blue I got a call from Steve the fraternity Christian and he invited me to a Bible study at EMU. The funny thing is he didn't know I had become a Christian! Of course I accepted! Through that study I found a church, and I was baptized in May of 1979. I have been an active member of Crossroads Community Baptist church since that time. http://www.peopleplace.org/templates/con25bl/default.asp?id=19753
I've taught adult Sunday school classes with the college students, single adults, and married adults, and I have served as a deacon for one 3 year term. I've been married for 15 wonderful years. My wife and I are currently active in the Choir, and occasionally teaching in our adult Sunday school class. We both work for the University of Michigan Hospitals in Ann Arbor. And God is Still Faithful!

Elena

Thank you so much for giving your testimony here in this forum. It is so wonderful when born again believers can share how they came to know the Lord and what He has done in their lives. Bless you for doing that. We never know who will read the things that we write on this site, but it is my prayer that we will be able to reach out to people that other sites might not be able to reach. That has been my whole objective for this site. I compare the site to the "Home Life Magazine" when I tell folks about it. As a fellow Baptist you will understand that as I feel sure you are familiar with the magazine. I want to provide all kinds of enjoyable things as well as spiritual ones for our members and people who just drop by to read the forums.

I love your church's site. It is a good one that I will visit more later when I am not about to fall asleep at the computer. LOL Thanks for sharing the site with us. It looks like you have a great church. Please invite your friends to join us here at TGP. The more of us who can spread the word, the more people we will be able to reach for the Lord.
