The Believer's Works and Rewards
The Bible is very clear that our salvation is based upon the completed work done on the Cross by Jesus Christ. Jesus said: "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" (John 14:6b, NKJV). It is also clear that we must individually receive this salvation by repenting of our sins and trusting in Jesus as our Lord and Savior. The apostle Paul tells us in Ephesians that we are saved by grace through Faith. "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast" (Eph. 2:8-9).
We then ask the question, what about works? When we look at the next verse, we see the answer. "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them" (Eph. 2:10). God has a job description for each of us and he has ordained that we should walk by faith in obedience to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Our natural gifts are enhanced and we are equipped with special gifts at the time we are saved and it is God's will that we use them and let Him magnify them. We are saved from hell by accepting Jesus as our Savior but our works determine our crowns and rewards in heaven. We are not sure what this means but they could determine our roles and privileges throughout eternity. We should be very concerned about our role in eternity!
