According to the Associated Press, Americans over 55 are filing for bankruptcy at a faster rate than the general population and this trend will likely continue. The growing mortgage debt and health-care costs are blamed. The rate for over 55 Americans is now 39% compared to 29% for the general population
The trend is toward self-funded or self-funded and employer supplemented 401K plans for retirement. Fewer companies offer pensions and many that offered pensions in the past are dropping them. This will have large consequences on a major portion of our population. Over half the families in America have retirement 401K plans with a balance of under $25,000.
